Sermon:

Modern Myths: Suicide: A Viable Option

Preached at: Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church
Date: November 17, 1991
The Judeo-Christian tradition places a high value on human life. But the value of human life has been greatly diminished in modern America with the acceptance of abortion. Now the other end of the spectrum (the elderly) are at risk. There is a story from ancient times when it was customary to take the aged father and put him in a basket and carry him up onto a mountainside and leave him there for the elements to dispose of or the wild beasts to devour. As one son was putting his old father in the basket, his father said, “Remember son, to bring the basket back, because they’re going to need it for you.” The son changed his plans at that point. It is, indeed, a slippery slope. Back in 1973, when Roe v. Wade was passed, many of us were saying that it was indeed the first step down that slippery slope, and it would lead to infanticide and suicide and euthanasia. There were those who mocked and said that was ridiculous and it would never happen. Yet that is what is beginning to happen.
